Bassists:
What would open up for you if thumb position actually felt easy?
You’ve probably told yourself some version of this:
“I’m just not ready for thumb position yet.”
“That’s for advanced players.”
“I’ll get to it when I’m good enough.”
But deep down, you know…
You’re avoiding it.
And it’s not because you’re lazy; it’s because it feels intimidating, confusing, and honestly a little out of reach.
Maybe you...
- avoid music that lives in thumb position because it feels overwhelming
- feel stuck in the lower half of the instrument, even though you know there’s more available to you
- have tried to learn thumb position before, but it never sounded great and was uncomfortable to play in
- don’t trust your intonation, sound, or physical setup beyond the octave harmonic
And feel like there’s a gap between the player you are and the player you want to be.
But what if thumb position didn't feel so daunting?
What if it felt like a gateway?
Imagine:
Playing freely across the entire fingerboard, without hesitation
Loving the way you sound up in the higher register
Accessing new expression, new repertoire, and a whole new side of your playing
This isn’t about “finally being advanced enough.”
It’s about learning the right way.
“I took Lauren’s Thumb Position Bootcamp in 2021. Even though it was a remote format, I still felt seen and included in the class. Lauren really takes the time to answer questions, and there is the opportunity to communicate with other class members for feedback and advice as well.
Though I wasn’t entirely new to thumb position at the time, her course helped to solidify and improve key concepts and techniques. Specifically, I found it useful to review body posture, hand shape, and an emphasis on slow practice to solidify intonation.
Beginning with simple but effective drills, the course took me through a variety of scale positions, shifting exercises, bowing variations, progressive patterns, and arpeggios - all while clearly demonstrating Lauren’s fingering system.
Between the course packet and the group lessons, the Boot Camp was a valuable experience which I still draw from when working in thumb position. So many of the exercises are helpful to revisit and incorporate into my own practice. I would recommend this course to anyone seeking a friendly environment to get more comfortable in the upper register or in need of a good method to understand and navigate the higher reaches of the fingerboard.”

Hi, I’m Lauren Pierce
I've spent my career teaching and mentoring bassists all over the world, and what I've seen firsthand, time and time again, is that most players don't struggle because they lack talent or discipline. They struggle because they haven't been shown how to do it in a way that actually works.
Thumb position is a perfect example of this. So many bassists feel stuck, limited, or intimidated by this part of the instrument, not because they aren't capable, but because no one has given them the right framework.
I know that desire to play freely, to sound the way you hear it in your head. I created this Bootcamp because I want that for you too.
My bow technique and thumb position have undergone a major transformation.
I chose instruction from Lauren to tap into the knowledge and experience of an expert. My hope was that it would be the most efficient way to learn best practices and level up my playing.
I was not disappointed!
I watched performance videos of Lauren on YouTube and was amazed at her sensitivity and technical proficiency on the Double Bass. When I heard she offered instruction, I was immediately interested.
In just three months, my bow technique and thumb position playing have undergone a major transformation. For the first time in my life, I see myself on the path to performing compositions I once only dreamed of playing.
Lauren's teaching method has been life-changing for me!

I don’t think I’m ready for this kind of workshop.
I’m going to tell you a secret: no one ever truly feels ready.
“Ready” is a feeling that tends to arrive after you make the leap, not before.
What I’ve seen time and time again with my students is that it’s less about being ready and more about having structure, support, and a plan. I designed Thumb Position Bootcamp to provide exactly this for people who aren't sure they're ready yet, but know they want to get there.
You’re going to experience friction either way.
- The friction of avoiding thumb position
- Or the friction of learning it
- One keeps you stuck.
- The other expands your entire playing.
In my discovery of Lauren Pierce, I found a bass devotee and guru who exceeded my wildest expectation of “bass coach.” Lauren has gathered and produced a body of philosophies, technical exercises, and something I would call “approach guidances” more comprehensive than what could fill a single method book.
Often, teachers of a musical instrument specialize in teaching, not so much in playing. Not Lauren; she puts her knowledge to the test of her own performance practice, reaching the highest pinnacle of what I would consider world-class solo bass achievement. If you check out her performances on YouTube, you will be astonished at her artistic and technical mastery of the most daring solo bass repertoire.

FAQs
When is the bootcamp?
May 15-17. Daily sessions run 10am–5pm CST (Sunday wraps up at 3pm)
What if I can’t make all of the sessions live?
Everything is recorded, so you can go back and watch the videos as many times as you need. As long as you can make at least 1-2 sessions each day, even if it’s the last session of the day, it’ll be worth it. However, I’ve had many clients who have just watched all the replays and got insane value.
Where is this happening?
This is a completely online intensive workshop, so the only travel required is to your computer!
How do I know this will work for me?
I can't promise it'll be effortless, but I can promise that if you show up and do the work, you'll leave with more clarity, confidence, and direction than you came in with. That's what this Bootcamp is designed to give you.
What level do I need to be?
The Bootcamp is for double bassists who want to develop their thumb position skills, but you don't need any prior thumb position experience to join. If you've been studying the bass for at least 6 months and can get a consistent sound in lower positions, you're ready. This is not a class for total beginners, but it absolutely is for anyone who's new to thumb position.
So let me ask you:
What kind of player do you want to be?
The one who stays where it’s comfortable?
Or the one who decides to find out what's possible?
